What We Arrange

Everything coordinated on one call

Wheelchair spaces

Designated spaces with an adjacent companion seat, secured tie-downs where required, and step-free access from the platform at staffed stations.

Accessible Bedrooms

One per Superliner sleeping car, on the lower level, with a wider door, roll-in shower, in-room toilet and an emergency call button. They sell out first.

Station meet-and-assist

Requested at origin, every transfer point and destination — with a minimum 24 hours notice, logged with the carrier at the time of booking.

Service animals

Trained service animals travel free and do not require documentation, but advance notice ensures the right space is allocated.

Companion fares

Many carriers offer a discounted rate for a travel companion accompanying a passenger with a disability. We apply it automatically.

Dietary and dining needs

Dining car meal requirements noted in advance, and in-room meal service arranged where mobility makes the dining car impractical.

Why Phone Matters Here

Booking engines handle accessible travel badly

Online systems frequently fail to display accessible inventory at all, cannot attach an assistance request to a reservation, and will happily sell a connection with a transfer window that is not achievable with a wheelchair.

Every one of those failures disappears in a five-minute conversation with somebody who knows which platforms have lifts, which transfers are realistic, and which trains carry which equipment.

  • Accessible inventory checked against the live system
  • Assistance logged at origin, transfers and destination
  • Transfer times sanity-checked for realistic mobility
  • Platform, lift and step-free access confirmed per station
  • Companion fares and eligible discounts applied
  • One number to call if anything changes on the day

ADA and UK accessibility commitments

Passenger rail in the United States operates under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which requires accessible stations, accessible car types on every consist and reasonable accommodation for passengers with disabilities. Amtrak provides designated wheelchair spaces, accessible restrooms on every car type, and an Accessible Bedroom in each Superliner and Viewliner sleeping car.

In the United Kingdom, Passenger Assist is a national scheme operated across all train operating companies. Assistance can formally be booked with as little as two hours notice, though we strongly recommend arranging it at the same time as the ticket so the request travels with the reservation.

Skyward Bookings is committed to making both this website and our booking service usable by everyone. Our accessibility commitments for the website itself are set out in our published Accessibility Statement.

Tell us early, not late

The Accessible Bedroom is capped at one per sleeping car and is the first accommodation to sell out on every long-distance route. If your dates are known, calling early is worth more than any discount we could find you.

Questions

Accessibility questions

How much notice do you need for station assistance?
Amtrak asks for at least 24 hours. UK operators formally accept requests with two hours notice. We arrange assistance during the same call as the booking so it is never left to the last minute.
Do I need documentation for a service animal?
No documentation is required for a trained service animal. Advance notice simply lets us allocate appropriate space, which matters in a Roomette.
Are all stations step-free?
No. Staffed stations generally provide ramp or lift boarding; some unstaffed halts do not. We confirm access at every station on your itinerary before ticketing.
Is there a discount for a travel companion?
Many carriers offer a reduced companion fare. Eligibility rules vary, and we apply whatever you qualify for without you needing to ask.
