The Basics

Six things that surprise first-time rail travelers

Luggage is free and generous

Two personal items plus two carry-ons up to 50 lbs each, with checked baggage at staffed stations on many routes. No liquid restrictions. No security screening on domestic services.

The seats are enormous

Amtrak coach seat pitch exceeds domestic airline first class, with leg rests, footrests and a recline that does not annoy the person behind you.

Dining cars still exist

Traditional dining with tablecloths and a proper menu is included for sleeping-car passengers on most long-distance routes. Café service is available to everyone.

Power everywhere, Wi-Fi mostly

Outlets are standard on virtually all intercity trains. Wi-Fi covers the Northeast Corridor, state corridors and all UK intercity operators; western long-distance coverage is genuinely patchy.

Pets and bikes travel too

Small pets under 20 lbs on most Amtrak routes up to seven hours, with strictly capped space. Walk-on bike service on many corridors with no boxing required.

Genuinely accessible

Level or ramped boarding, wide corridors, accessible restrooms on every car type, a companion seat beside every wheelchair space, and no transfer to an aisle chair.

Sleeping

Roomette, Bedroom or Family Room?

A Roomette sleeps two in facing seats that convert to upper and lower berths, with a door, a window and shared corridor facilities. A Bedroom is roughly double the size with a private toilet and shower inside the room.

On Amtrak long-distance routes every sleeping-car fare includes all meals in the dining car for everyone in the room, priority boarding, lounge access at major stations and a dedicated car attendant.

  • Roomette — 2 passengers, shared facilities, best value
  • Bedroom — 2 passengers, private toilet and shower
  • Family Room — 2 adults + 2 children, full car width
  • Accessible Bedroom — lower level, step-free, roll-in shower
  • Take the lower berth: wider, has the window, no ladder

Questions

Onboard questions

Is the food actually good?
Traditional dining on the western long-distance routes is genuinely good — cooked onboard, served at a table with a view. Flexible dining on some eastern routes is a plated, reheated alternative and noticeably less impressive. We will tell you which service your train runs.
Can I sleep in coach?
Yes, and many people do. Amtrak coach seats recline deeply with leg and foot rests, and the cars are darkened overnight. Bring a blanket — the air conditioning is enthusiastic.
Is there a shower?
Every sleeping car has a shower. Bedrooms have one in the room; Roomette passengers use the shared shower at the end of the car, which is cleaner and better appointed than most people expect.
What about mobile signal?
Absent for long stretches of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Montana and West Texas. Download everything before you board. Many travelers come to regard this as the best feature of the trip.
