Pets

Yes, your dog can come. Within limits.

Pet space on American trains is capped at a handful of animals per departure and cannot be added after booking. This is a call-early situation.

The Amtrak pet policy in plain English

Small cats and dogs are permitted on most Amtrak routes for journeys up to seven hours, for a fee, provided the animal and its carrier together weigh no more than 20 pounds. The carrier must fit under the seat and the animal must remain inside it for the entire journey.

Space is strictly capped per train — typically around five pets — and is allocated at the time of booking. It cannot be added later, and it is not shown reliably by online search.

  • Combined pet and carrier weight limit: 20 lbs
  • Journeys up to seven hours on eligible routes
  • Carrier must fit under the seat, animal stays inside
  • Not permitted in sleeping cars or on certain routes
  • Space is capped per train and sells out first
  • Service animals are exempt and travel free without limits

Britain is far more relaxed

UK train operators allow up to two dogs, cats or other small animals per passenger to travel free of charge on virtually all services, and they do not need to be in a carrier provided they are kept on a lead and off the seats.

This is one of the genuine pleasures of British rail travel and one of the sharpest contrasts with American practice.

  • Up to two animals per passenger, free of charge
  • No carrier required if on a lead and off the seats
  • Permitted on nearly all operators including Eurostar assistance dogs
  • Larger dogs entirely acceptable
  • Some sleeper services have specific rules — we check them
Questions

Pet travel questions

Can my dog travel in a sleeping car on Amtrak?
No. Pets are permitted only in coach on eligible routes. Service animals are exempt from this restriction and may accompany you in a sleeping car.
What if my dog is over 20 pounds?
It cannot travel as a pet on Amtrak. If the animal is a trained service animal there is no size limit. For non-service animals over the limit, we will be straight with you: rail is not the option.
How far in advance should I book pet space?
As early as possible. With roughly five slots per train, pet space is frequently the first inventory to disappear on popular departures.
Do I need vaccination records?
A signed pet release and indemnification form is required at the station, and current vaccination is expected. Requirements change, so confirm with your agent at the time of booking.
