Is the Amtrak Rail Pass Actually Worth It?

Ten segments in 30 days for a fixed price. The maths works brilliantly for some trips and terribly for others.

What the pass is

The USA Rail Pass covers ten one-way segments within 30 days. A segment is a single train, so a journey requiring a change counts as two. Coach only — sleeper accommodation is an extra charge on top, at the room-only rate.

When it wins

  • Long segments: Chicago–Emeryville, Chicago–Seattle, New York–New Orleans
  • Multi-city loops across the country
  • Flexible travelers who can move dates to find pass space
  • Trips where you would otherwise buy 6+ long-distance coach tickets

When it loses

  • Northeast Corridor hops — individual fares are cheap and pass space is limited
  • Trips with many short connecting segments that burn segments fast
  • Peak season travel when pass inventory is capped
  • Anyone who mainly wants a sleeper — the room charge dominates the cost

The catch nobody mentions

Pass space is capped per train and is separate from ordinary inventory. A train can have coach seats for sale and no pass space at all. This is the single most common source of disappointment, and it is why we price the pass against point-to-point tickets on every call before recommending it.
