Door to door is the only measure that counts
The flight is 75 minutes. Add 45 minutes to LaGuardia, 60 minutes for security and gate, 25 minutes taxiing, 20 minutes deplaning and 45 minutes from National into DC. Realistic door to door: four and a half hours.
Acela is 2 hours 55 minutes, and both ends are in the middle of the city. You arrive 10 minutes before departure. Door to door: about three hours fifteen.
The reliability gap
Northeast Corridor rail runs above 80% on-time. Shuttle flights out of LaGuardia in summer thunderstorm season are a lottery, and the failure mode is a three-hour tarmac hold rather than a fifteen-minute delay.
What the train gives you that the plane cannot
- A table, power and Wi-Fi for the whole journey — three usable working hours
- No liquid restrictions, no security theatre, no baggage fees
- Two bags free, plus two personal items
- A seat you can leave to walk to the café car
- Arrival in Midtown Manhattan or a block from the Capitol
When the plane still wins
Boston to Washington end to end, where the flight advantage finally exceeds the airport overhead. And anything beyond about 500 miles where no high-speed alternative exists. We will tell you honestly when that is your situation.
